    2020 Season Update

Dear swim families and Masters swimmers,We are writing to provide an update and to ask if you plan to register, or register your swimmer/swimmers, again this season. We have now heard from the City of Fernie and anticipate that the Fernie Aquatic Centre may open by late September. We anticipate that there will be changes this year that may (will likely) include the following: - limits on the number of people in the facility - limits on the number of swimmers per lane - changes to practise times - changes to facility access and egress - availability of change rooms Our main focus is to create a safe atmosphere for all swimmers to resume training (and competing). To that end, the EVDSC has a Covid-19 Safety Officer, Wendy Howse. She, and other board members along with the Head Coach AIdan Chudleigh, have created a Return to Swimming Plan that is based on Swim BC, Swim Canada, Via Sport, and Worksafe BC guidelines. Our Return to Swimming Plan forms the basis of the EVDSC Covid-19 Safety Plan. The EVDSC is working with the City of Fernie to ensure that our plan meets their facility guidelines. The City has advised us of the following:

At the August 17th Committee of the Whole meeting, the Manager of Parks, Facilities and Recreation presented Council with an Indoor Facility Reopening Strategy Report. As a result, Council directed Staff to work towards the planned reopening of the Fernie Memorial Arena, Aquatic Centre and Max Turyk Community Gym for mid to late September. The proposed strategy for these facilities is to reopen with modified hours, reduced programming and amenities until further provincial restrictions are lifted.

With many operational and building modifications required to facilitate COVID safe operations, we ask for your patience as staff works diligently to prepare to welcome groups back into these community spaces. These preparations include facility specific COVID-19 Safety Plans that will compliment the City’s existing Exposure Control Plan. This information will be circulated as soon as possible so groups can complete their COVID-19 safety plans required for booking space in our facilities.

As soon as we hear back from the City, we will be able to move forward with registration, and it is our goal to have registration information in the next week or so. We do anticipate that we may have less capacity this season than previously, but our goal remains as always, to be the 'best little swim club in BC!"

We would like to gauge interest regarding this season so we ask you to please email back and let us know if you are interested in registering (your swimmer) this season. We would like to have a sense of numbers so we can move forward.

    Thank you

    Board of the EVDSC
